The first step to building your business brand

Updated: Oct 1

Your business already has a personality - whether you like it or not.  But do you know what it is?

It can be summed up by the words your clients or customers use to talk about you when you’re not in the room.

Obviously It goes without saying you want these words to be good ones.  But you can start to influence what these words are by actively choosing them

By deciding on three words that describe your business brand, you’ll get more focused.  You can intentionally start to make your business become more like the words you’ve chosen.

And it helps you differentiate your business in your marketing and written communications.

So, what should these words be, and how do you find them?

Decide what matters to you

Start with what you value.  Is quality key?  Is being efficient important? Do you want to be seen as a business that’s progressive?  Original?  Helpful?

Ask the people you work with

Your customers, clients, suppliers and employees will give you useful insights.  How do they already describe you?  Do you have testimonials?  Are there any words that come up again and again?

Look at your competitors

Check out your competition.  Look at businesses you admire and see which words spring to mind when you think of them.  Would any of them suit you?

Do some brainstorming

Ask yourself what your ideal brand should be.  Think about the product or service you offer and what this stands for.  But it needs to be something you feel you can get behind and believe.

If you’re struggling, look at my list below.  Gather a shortlist and arrange similar words into groups (eg friendly, helpful, supportive). Then pick the best one.

When you finally have your three words, you can apply them across all the things you do as a business.

Bear them in mind when you’re writing emails.

When you’re talking to people.

Doing presentations.

Networking.

Now you’re building a brand.  You’re in the driving seat.  And all your future marketing can stem from these three little words.

You’ll be surprised at what a difference it can make.
